In a Hurry?
If you are in a hurry, then simply have a look at two of these models below.

  • Fiskars X7 – lightweight and practically indestructible.
  • Estwing E14A – can be used as both an ace and a hatchet, immune to rusting.

1. Fiskars X7 – Our Pick

Fiskars have been a top player since 1649 and with the x7 it becomes clear as to why. At only 1.4lbs, the x7 is no toy and can deal with anything you throw at it.

Being lightweight along with its small size, it can easily be added to your bug out bag without any problem. If you are looking for an inexpensive yet virtually indestructible hatchet, the Fiskars x7 is the one.

Fiskars x7

The total length of the hatchet is 14″ and the cutting edge is 2.75″

This hatchet has been made to be durable. It has an inseparable Permahead insert-molded head that prevents overstrike breakage. The handle eliminates practically all the vibrations and shock from strikes.

Fiskars x7 handle

The head of the hatchet is made out of a hardened, forged steel. This allows the edge to stay sharper longer than the typical hatchet blade and comes incredibly sharp so can be used straight out of the box. The x7 chops through oak with ease and chews through softwood like butter.

The handle is hollow inside, however, you soon realize that there is absolutely no weakness at all. As well as impressive strength, the grip is amazing. The handle is smooth, yet at the same time, it has a great grip.

The x7 comes with the famous Fiskars Lifetime Guarantee that covers damage to the axe and handle.
  • Virtually indestructable
  • Comes with lifetime warranty
  • Lightweight but durable
  • Composite handle dampens vibrations entirely
  • Great design
  • Edge retention suffers if reground

2. Schrade SCAXE2 – Most Functional

The Schrade SCAXE2 is one tough piece of equipment. It features a titanium coated 3Cr13 stainless steel head with rear hammer pommel. It is completed with a black glass fiber filled PA handle with an ergonomic black TPR rubber grip that won’t slip in the hand during use.

An extra-large ferro rod fire starter with lanyard stows away neatly and securely inside the base of the handle. It is fitted with a molded thermoplastic sheath although this is not brilliant quality and I would recommend swapping it for a better quality one.

The Schrade SCAXE2 has an overall length of 11.8″ with a good size to weight ratio that will get the job done.

This also contains a nice sized ferro rod hidden in the handle so you always have a good tool to throw out a large amount of sparks.

Schrade SCAXE2 pommel

Let’s have a look at the best features and details of the Schrade SCAXE2 and why it makes our list of the top 5 best survival hatchets and axes of 2018.

  • Included ferro rod produces large sparks
  • Because of the hollow handle it can vibrate a bit when used hard

3. Mora Camp Axe

I have always been a fan of Mora knives and so was excited when we got the chance to review the Mora Camp Axe.

Just like the knives they are known for, this axe comes with a sturdy reinforced plastic handle. I don’t usually like plastic in my tools as usually they are just pathetic but like their knives, the camp axe is super strong.

It has a 4.5″ blade which is nice and slim at only 0.24″ which makes chopping through smaller wood a breeze. The axe head is also made out of black epoxy-coated boron steel to protect the head from rust and comes with a nice little leather sheath.

Unlike many hatchets, the mora camp axe doesn’t have a wedge shaped head but that isn’t really too much of an issue.

This is a nice lightweight hatchet weighing in at only 17.6oz which makes it an easy addition to your kit without adding too much weight.

Mora camp axe review

This is a great axe for any smaller tasks that need to be done around camp but maybe not so much for larger jobs.

If I were to have to pick between this or the Fiskers x7 above, I would have to go with the Fiskers as for the price, you can do so much more.

  • Small size
  • Lightweight
  • Nice balance
  • Great for small tasks
  • Plastic handle could be better
  • Not good for larger tasks

4. Fiskars x11

Fiskars have taken their second spot in our top 5 survival hatchets and axes of 2020 and this time with the x11. If you need to handle bigger logs that your hatchet just can’t handle, this is the tool for the job.

This is a nice lightweight axe that can easily be used with one hand and it offers incredible balance. The power to weight ratio increases the swing speed so that the power can be multiplied.

This axe has an ultra-sharp blade that stays sharp for a long period even after heavy use.
