EMP Protection: What You Need to Know
In order for you to protect your electrical devices from an EMP attack, you need to learn to safeguard them from the effects of electromagnetic pulse. Many do not see this to be of high importance but we believe that the threat of us becoming the victims of a nuclear, or non-nuclear EMP attack from a hostile country is at an all time high.
What will happen is that if a nuclear bomb is detonated from 25 to 250 miles above the horizon line, the magnetic field lines of the earth would be disrupted by a massive pulse of x-rays and gamma radiation-containing photons. It is the trapped electrons in the field lines of the earth which would cause a dangerous fluctuating electric current that will be capable of disabling electronic equipment.
Is The Threat of an EMP Attack High?
A single nuclear weapon detonated at high altitude over this country would collapse our electrical grid and other critical infrastructures and endanger the lives of millions. With North Korea in possession of nuclear missiles and Iran close to having them, an EMP is no longer a theoretical concern — it is a real threat.
The truth is, citizens are not prepared for an EMP attack. Most people do not have more than three days-worth of food and water stored. Many do not have extra batteries on hand for flashlights, radios or other equipment for any extended length of time. Most people have no idea what an EMP attack even is and how it could affect them.
Without the proper EMP protection, the target area would experience disruption in the following places:
- Vehicle engines. Most vehicles now rely heavily on electronics.
- Airplanes again relying on electronics could simply fall from the sky.
- Pacemakers and other medical devices would stop functioning.
- Most modern communication systems would be affected.
- Electric grid would completely fail – not hard considering how vulnerable it already is.
- Water pumping stations
- Your electrical appliances at home
- Stoplights and other electronic road signs
It is likely that following an EMP attack, a rapid and complete breakdown of our infrastructure would happen.
You can protect your own electonic devices by keeping them in containers that are made from aluminum or copper, commonly known as faraday cages. Your protected devices will be able to resist electromagnetic pulse effects.
If you visit the above link, the video will show you how to take a galvanized metal trash can lined with thick cardboard as insulation and turn it into a faraday cage. This is a simple solution for your small electronics but to be honest, you would need something much bigger to protect everything that you have.
Metal filing cabinets also work well as long as the electrical devices that you are trying to protect do not come in contact with the metal cabinet. This is why the trash can is lined with the thick cardboard.
You can wrap smaller electronic devices in aluminum foil, but be sure to wrap them in plastic first and use two or three layers of foil.
Lithium batteries can last up to 15 years and are probably your best bet when it comes to stocking batteries in case of an EMP attack. Any batteries you store should be wrapped in aluminum foil to keep them protected from EMP weapons.
As we saw in our list above, vehicles will also be affected. This means that there may not be the usual deliveries to stores but also cash machines will not be functioning. Because of this, you must have enough food, water, and medical supplies for your family to survive these shortages and social breakdown. The inability to communicate while the government tries to restore power will look like a war zone scene on TV as people suffer from lack of drinkable water and good food.
