How Women Can Prevent Potential Attacks

How Women Can Prevent Potential Attacks

Just because statistics may show that violent crimes have decreased over the years, violence still remains incredibly high with 90% of all victims being female.

The sad reality is that we are probably all going to be the target of some form of assault.

Women must be prepared whenever they go out to protect themselves. We are going to look at some simple tips for how women can prevent potential attacks.

Self-Defense Classes

It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just some basic knowledge can go a long way in your personal protection. There are usually plenty of different classes and schools popping up so find a style that suits you and a place where you feel comfortable. If I could recommend any self-defense style it would have to be Krav Maga just because it has helped me so much since I’ve started learning.

Self-Defense Tools

Here in the UK we are very limited to what we can legally carry with us for protection. Farb-gel is a legal criminal identifying spray that will stain the skin of an attacker for days after but it is important that you are always carrying something that you are trained to use for protection, even if it’s just a rolled up newspaper. If you live over in the States then your most obvious tools would be a stun gun or pepper spray.

It is always good to know the moves of some form of self-defense but it only works if the attacker attacks as you have been trained. Self-defense tools are a safer solution in case you ever get caught off guard.

Always Be Aware

Being aware of your surroundings will always make my lists as it is so important. It is when we let our guard down that bad things happen. Targets are chosen because they look ‘easy’ so you can avoid this by simply taking notice and paying attention to what is going on around you and pay attention to the people you pass.

After Dark Safety

It doesn’t matter where you’re going, if it’s dark, you need to be cautious. Whether you are walking the hallway or crossing a parking lot, keep your eyes up and always look for potential escape routes.

The Buddy System

You are more likely to be attacked if you walk alone rather than with other people. The buddy system is an effective method of using this for our protection. The idea is pretty straightforward. Don’t go out alone, ever! If you’re going anywhere, always take a friend or somebody else along too. A dog can also be a good deterrent.

Keep Your Hands Free

As I have said before, criminals want easy targets. If they see a woman walking with both hands full of shopping and another woman with empty hands, which do you think they’d attack? Know that you are always a potential target and try to keep your hands free whenever possible.

Make Some Noise

If you believe that an attack is imminent you need to start making as much noise as possible to alert as many people as possible. The more eyes that you can get on the attacker, the better the chance that he will be caught. Shout, scream, yell, do whatever you have to do to cause a scene.

The above are just some simple tips that you should always keep in mind when you plan on going out anywhere. It is a sad fact that any of us are targeted by a criminal but luckily for us, there are measures we can take to better prepare and protect ourselves.
