Protecting Yourself from Date Rape Drugs

Protecting Yourself from Date Rape Drugs

Sadly, the use of date rape drugs is on the rise and even worse is the fact that many people just don’t know how to avoid becoming a victim. These types of drugs are usually used to make a person more susceptible for sexual assault.

In the tips below, when we use the word “drink” we are not just referring to alcohol. Date rape drugs can be slipped into any drink including water due to them being odorless, colorless and tasteless. They may be slipped into a drink by someone that you know and thought that you could trust or it may be by someone that you have only just met.

They leave the victim open to assault due to them making them feel physically weak or they may even pass out. In many cases, the rapist gets away with their crime as the victim can usually not remember what happened to them.

Alcohol itself is a date rape drug though oftentimes Rohypnol® (flunitrazepam), GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid), or ketamine are used.

Date Rape Statistics

The following date rape statistics have been taken from Credit Donkey. Click their link to see more:

  • 25% of reported date rapes are committed by someone very close to the victim, such as a current or ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, or even an ex-spouse.
  • A shocking 55% of the date rapes occurred in the victim’s own home. As many as 12% of the rapes occurred in a relative’s or acquaintance’s home.
  • Only 42% of the victims of the attacks reported it to the police.
  • As many as 69% of rape victims worry about being blamed for the crime.
  • For every 1,000 cases of rape, only 6 will spend time in jail. That means more than 99% of perpetrators will walk free.
  • One-third of rape victims have thought about suicide at some point following the crime.
  • 12% of college students think it isn’t necessary to report the rape to authorities.

Signs of a Date Rape Drug

If you or anyone you are with believe that they have been drugged, seek medical help immediately. Common signs to watch out for include:

  • Feeling intoxicated despite not having drunk any, or minimal alcohol
  • Feeling confused or disoriented
  • Losing consciousness
  • Not remembering how you got somewhere
  • Being unable to remember anything after drinking
  • Waking up feeling confused, hungover, or unable to recall the night before
  • Genital or urinary pain and difficulty remembering what happened
  • Torn clothes

If You Think You’ve Been Drugged

It is possible that the victim may lose consciousness quickly after the drug. Don’t waste time by trying to find the perpetrator or searching online to see if your symptoms match those of a date rape drug.

Instead, immediately let a trusted friend know what you believe has happened and ask them to call for emergency help and get to a safe place.

Next, you should seek emergency medical care. Date rape drugs leave the body within a few hours, leaving no trace. Tell the doctor, nurse, or dispatcher that you may have been drugged and request immediate testing.

Even if it isn’t until the morning after when you think that you may have been raped, head straight for the hospital and they will be able to use a rape kit to test for signs of sexual assault. Avoid showering until after the exam.

Protecting Yourself from Date Rape Drugs

Know this, if you are drugged and taken advantage of, it’s not your fault. People who date rape other people are committing a crime.

Always Watch Your Drink

In most cases, the date rape drugs are slipped into a drink when the victim is not looking. For this reason it is very important that you never let your drink out of your site. If you need to use the restroom, take your drink with you. If you do leave your drink at the table, it is safer to just pour it away when you return and order a fresh one.

Don’t Accept Drinks from Other People

When a drink is bought for you, drugs may already have been slipped into it. You must never share drinks with others and don’t accept drinks that are bought for you. If you do accept a drink then go to the bar and only take the drink from the bartender. This way you will be able to watch it get poured and carry it back to your table yourself.

Never Leave with a Stranger After a Party

Always have a trusted friend or family member come and pick you up at an arranged time after a party and never accept a lift from someone you don’t know or that you only just met. Do not ever let your friends leave with a stranger or someone they do not know very well either.

Date Rape Gadgets

There are quite a few little gadgets available now that are inexpensive and can be carried with you and used to see whether date rape drugs have been put into your drink. These range from napkins and coasters, to cups, to straws and even nail polish that you can see on Amazon here.

The fear of having date rape drugs slipped into a drink can make some people avoid social situations. As long as you keep the above tips in mind and understand how to handle yourself, you have no reason to fear. Parties are notorious for date rape drug attacks so always be cautious of strangers and never accept any drink from someone that you don’t know unless you go to the bar yourself.
