Sewing for Survival

 Sewing for Survival

We need clothes, it is a form of shelter for our bodies. They can help keep us warm or even keep the rain off. If we need it, we go straight to the store and buy it. When we need new clothes we don’t repair the ones we have we just buy new.

But let’s just for a moment take the time to imagine that we have been woken in the night to some huge catastrophic event. You look out of the window and you see buildings destroyed, fires everywhere, just complete chaos. In this case there would be no stores operating for quite a while and you aren’t going to be able to buy new whenever you want it. What would you do?

The simple answer to the above question is to be/get prepared for situations such as this happening for real. One often overlooked set of prepping supplies is the sewing equipment. Now I’m not personally a very good sewer, in fact, I’m terrible, BUT I know enough to get me by if I need it. Basic skills is more than enough and you can always learn more as you go if you wanted.

You’re cheapest option would be to put a sewing kit together or purchase a pre-made one. Either way, you are going to need the following items:

  • Buttons – lots of different shapes and sizes. You can collect more as you go
  • Thread – lots of but standard colors such as black, dark blue and white.
  • Straight pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Materials – different colors and weights
  • Patterns
  • Zippers
  • Scissors – two pair, small and a large heavy weight one.  I recommend spares for both.
  • Needles
  • Seam bindings
  • Thimbles

If you have a speciality when it comes to sewing then you may wish to include more items to help keep that specific thing going too.

Sewing is not hard to pick up so get started now and add another skill to your set.
