What to Do Following an EMP Strike

What to Do Following an EMP Strike

An EMP could quite easily destroy lives yet very few people are familiar with what an EMP even is.

I am sure most of us have experienced a power outage to some degree but what if that outage lasted weeks, months or even years? The food in your cupboards will start to go bad and your bank accounts won’t be working so you can’t just head to the store to replenish. What then?

A single EMP strike could have devastating effects. It could disable all modern electronics, eliminating communications, food, water, transportation, medicine distribution, and our financial system. Airplanes could fall straight out of the sky after they rely so heavily on electricity to function. It is important that you understand that this is a real threat and you need to take the time to prepare.

It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

While researching this post, I came across a number of websites that claimed that an EMP wouldn’t actually do any damage to your vehicle. This is a false claim.

Modern vehicles are full of electronics, from fuel injection to transmission controls and everything in between, so it only seems logical that a powerful EMP would turn any modern vehicle into an expensive paperweight by shutting down the electrical system or permanently damaging it.

Now, the electronics in vehicles are already somewhat shielded so the effects may not be too damaging or long-lasting but we don’t know for sure just how strong a strike will be.

And even if your vehicle is still running after an EMP strike, it will only be running for as long as you have a stored supply of gas. You won’t be able to go to the gas station and fill it back up as the pumps are electronic. Get where we’re going?

Today we are going to take a look at those actions that you must take immediately following an EMP strike.

Don’t Jump to Conclusions

Just because your workplace may have suffered a power outage, it doesn’t mean that it was an EMP.

You must take the time to relax and try to work out what is happening. Try to check multiple electrical devices including those that are not connected to the electrical grid. If devices such as your mobile phone has also stopped working, you can be sure of an EMP.

Shop Early

If you require anything from the stores, you should get it immediately. As soon as people are aware of what is happening, the shelves will be quick to empty.

You should be aware that if it is an EMP, you won’t be able to use your cards in store so you will only be able to use cash. This is another important reason as to why you should get an emergency fund in place now and always keep money on hand as you also won’t be able to use any ATM machines.

Stay Tuned In

We mention the importance of hand crank or solar powered radios on this site quite often and this would be a good example of when you would need to use it. These would be unaffected by an EMP and will help you to keep up-to-date with what is happening.

By knowing exactly what is going on, you will be in a much better position to know what your next move should be.

You can find a full list of emergency advisory radio stations across America here. Here in the UK, we do not currently have a system in place like our friends overseas in terms of an emergency radio station.

Put Your Survival Plan in to Action

You should have a survival plan in place way before any disaster occurs. In fact, you should have more than one plan. One plan for if you choose to bug in, and another for if you are bugging out. Now is the time to decide which is the safest option for you and your family and follow that plan through.

Again, staying tuned in to the local radio stations will help you to decide which is the best option. Is it only your city that is affected or the whole country?

Fill Up With Water

This should already be in your plan but I wanted to make a point of it here as water is essential to your survival.

If the Grid goes down, your water supply will eventually stop. Fill up your tub as soon as you can, along with anything else that can hold large quantitiesof water.

Notify Your Neighbors

They may be in denial and not want to hear it but you need to try and get your close neighbors to understand what is happening and what they need to do.

Ration Your Food

As you won’t know how long the grid will be affected, you must start rationing your food straight away. Start off by taking an inventory of the stock that you have and taking steps to have just enough to meet your daily requirements.

Get Ready to Defend

If the EMP has been a major event, chaos will surely follow. You must prepare your home for the inevitable scavengers that will come around looking for food. Even the nicest of people now can turn into something completely different when they have a family that is going hungry.

One step that you should take before an EMP strike hits are building or buying a Faraday Cage. This will protect your electronics from EMPs.
